What Are Dunlop Factory Spec Tires (and Do You Need Them)?

Dunlop's Factory Spec tire is a version of the standard Geomax MX34 built with the same single-radius profile that factory race teams used before Dunlop made it available to everyone. It trades some durability for a level of feel and traction the standard tire doesn't have, and it isn't the right call for every rider.

What makes it different from the standard MX34

The standard Geomax MX34 uses a double-radius profile designed for agility and predictable handling across a range of conditions. The Factory Spec version switches to a single-radius profile instead, the same shape Dunlop originally reserved for factory-supported racers. That change is what gives the tire its distinct feel: more consistent contact through corners and better control as a track surface breaks down and gets rougher over the course of a moto.

Where it performs best

According to Dunlop's own product page, the Factory Spec tire is built for soft, loamy, and sandy terrain, exactly the conditions where a track chews up and gets rutted and unpredictable as a race goes on. If you're riding hardpack or rocky trails most of the time, the standard MX34 is still the better match for your terrain.

The durability tradeoff

The Factory Spec compound isn't built to last as long as the standard MX34. Motocross Action Magazine's testing found the Factory Spec runs roughly 10 percent less durable than the standard tire, a tradeoff Dunlop made intentionally to prioritize grip over tread life. For a rider doing one moto a weekend, that difference barely registers. For someone racking up hours of practice laps every week, it means replacing tires more often.

Who actually needs one

If you're racing regularly and chasing every bit of edge in soft or deteriorating conditions, the Factory Spec earns its place. If you're a weekend rider putting in casual trail miles or riding mixed terrain, the standard MX34 will last longer and perform just as well for how you actually ride. This isn't a tire that makes an average rider faster. It's a tire that lets a rider who's already pushing the limit extract a little more from soft, changing conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Factory Spec tire only for pro racers?

No. Dunlop originally supplied it only to factory teams, but it's now sold to the public. It's built for serious racers chasing maximum performance in soft conditions, not exclusively for professionals.

Does the Factory Spec fit the same rim sizes as the standard MX34?

Yes, it's built in the same size range as the standard Geomax MX34, so fitment isn't a factor in choosing between them.

Will I notice the durability difference in casual riding?

Most weekend riders won't put in enough hours between rides to notice the roughly 10 percent shorter tread life. It becomes more relevant for riders logging frequent track time.

Is Factory Spec worth the extra attention over the standard tire?

Only if soft, loamy, or rutted-out conditions make up a meaningful part of your riding or racing. Otherwise the standard MX34 gives you similar performance with longer tread life.

If you ride mostly soft or sandy tracks and want to feel the difference yourself, the Dunlop Factory Spec tire is in stock here. For everyday terrain, the standard Geomax MX34 covers most riders, and the full Dunlop lineup has both in stock alongside the rest of the range.
